Who We Are

The Multicultural Institute (MI) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1991. Our mission is to be a stepping stone that helps society transition immigrants from poverty and isolation to prosperity and participation.

From its inception, under the leadership of Fr. Rigoberto Calocarivas, MI has continually nurtured partnerships with diverse civic, business, and community leaders. These partnerships have been instrumental in the launch of several successful projects and community leadership endeavors. An elected board of directors and oversee MI’s work, which is carried out by a core group of full-time staff, part-time staff, and many enthusiastic volunteers.

Now in operation for 25 years, the Multicultural Institute has continued its gradual and steady growth. The Institute’s activities, however, are proportionately more far-reaching than its modest budget because the low-cost space and in-kind support that the Institute is able to obtain helps reduce costs. The Multicultural Institute works to undertake and sustain transformational change work with its core constituencies (immigrant workers; and immigrant and other low-income children, youth, and their families).
